Welcome to the Online Launch Party!

launch1

It’s the official online launch of By the Rivers of Brooklyn. And you get the same thing the people at the live launch got: a little bit of me reading from the book (at the launch, the reading was longer, and the lighting was better!):

Here’s how you can participate in the online party:

1. Post here to say “Hi!” “Congratulations!” “I’m wearing my virtual pink silk party dress and while nibbling on a piece of virtual chocolate cheesecake!” or whatever gets you in the party mood.

2. Go to THIS LINK and order a copy of By the Rivers of Brooklyn. The more orders we get in one day the more buzz it will create around the book on Indigo’s site (at least, that’s the plan).

3. Post here and say, “I ordered a copy of the book today from Indigo!” If you would like to be entered in the prize draw, add: “Please include my name in the prize draw,” and I will.

What are the prizes, you may ask?

EVERYONE gets a chance to help a good cause: for every book ordered I will donate $1 to a project to buy stoves and cooking supplies for refugee families (hey, it’s a book about immigrants, there’s a connection).

The other, actual prizes are mainly of interest to writers, but if you’re not a writer yourself, you can still enter and share the prize with a writer friend.

ONE lucky first-place winner will get a free reading and evaluation of a full-length book manuscript, a service for which you would probably pay several hundred dollars professionally. I will read your manuscript, comment at length upon it and discuss it with you.

A SECOND lucky winner will get another writerly prize: A personalized, one-on-one character development session from writer and workshop teacher (and my friend) Ami Hendrickson (www.museink.com), which, like my manuscript evaluation, will involve reading scenes from your manscript, with a personal response and follow-up.

The online launch party goes on for the next 24 hours — have fun and be sure to let me know when you’ve ordered the book!

  1. Congratulations! This website is very well done. I will order the book on the 30th of June. I don’t know what that does to the stats, knowing I’m here, have the link, but am delaying the purchasing.
The reading video was great. I think the lighting gave it a great storytelling atmosphere.

Looks like a very interesting read, Trudy, especially considering my Newfoundland-Canadian-American heritage and life experience. I also remember a book by Joey Smallwood that placed a part of his Newfoundland story in New York City. I hadn’t realized the extent of the Newfoundland-New England connection. My only regret is that the book isn’t available immediately from either Chapters/Indigo in Canada or Amazon in the US. I’ve added to my wish list on Amazon. I doubt that will help your first sales number buzz though! All the best Trudy!!

  3. Shelly

Congratulations on your book, Trudy! I just ordered a copy! Yay!

  4. Sharon

Have I come too early? Should I have been fashionably late?? I can never get these things right, always too early or late.
I ordered the book. There was only a little glitch until I found a credit card that Chapters liked. In three weeks I’ll have a copy of my own so I can share (or not share) with my mother who also said she wanted to read it. (She has ummm…. tender …ummmm ……sensiblities.)
I’m looking forward to seeing you in a week or so. The reading was great. I do wish we had heard more though. I’ll just have to be patient.
As far as the contest goes, I don’t have a complete novel, so maybe I am not the best winner. Sigh….
Okay, I am heading for the virtual door in my virtual “little black dress” on my virtual size six figure. Just as soon as I have delicately eaten a few vitual hors d’oeuvres. Oh, and I will listen to Craig Ferguson ramble a bit. If we are living in the virtual world we can have him, can’t we?

  5. Thanks for showing up to get the party started, folks.

Larry, you will definitely get the book faster from Indigo, and more orders will encourage them to keep it in stock (we hope). You can also order it (but not as cheaply) from http://www.breakwaterbooks.com

Sharon and Shelley, thanks for the orders, and Sharon, we can have whatever we want at a virtual party!

    Trudy!
Way to go! I enjoyed the reading clip. . .unfortunately, I had to enjoy it the next day due to my sleeping addiction. I just ordered our family\’s copy of \”Brooklyn\” and await the 3 weeks with bated breath (inhaling every so often so\’s I don\’t die from oxygen deprivation). Congrats on the party. I hope it was fun – it looks like a success!

  7. WooHoo!!
Here I am, in my not-virtual-at-all sloppy housedress, putting off going out and milking the goat and feeding the chickens and horses. It’s 8:29 am – hmm, have to add some virtual moonlight to make a good party. The reading helps, with its eerie dimness. . .
Way to go, girl! Here comes the NYT bestseller list, the NB best seller list, the FB bestseller list . . . well, you get the picture.
An odd thing – maybe it’s the lighting, but you look amazingly like me! Even the movement of your mouth as you read. Maybe we’re twin sisters, separated at birth. Can I have half your huge profits?
    ๐Ÿ˜€
Wish I could order, but pickings are slim right now. Good luck and God bless you!

  8. Thanks for dropping by the party, Scott and Debbonnaire! (I think I need to see a video of you, Deb, to confirm our amazing similarity).

  9. Hi all,

Don’t worry about ordering from Chapters. The book will arrive to you quicker than you think. Their time estimates aren’t quite accurate.

    Good luck Trudy!!

  10. Thanks Anna Kate; I thought that was probably the case. (Chapters is the same as Indigo, for you non-Canadians out there). Larry, if you’re checking this again, I’d suggest you try ordering from Indigo.

  11. Ami

    Hello, Trudy,

I posted an invite to the book launch on my blog (http://museinks.blogspot.com/) today. Hope it drives some traffic your way. I’m off to talk to the farrier. Will let you know when I order the book later this morning.

    All the best to you!

    Ami

  12. Thanks Ami! Ami is the donator of prize #2, a very gifted writer and editor, and the only person I know who has used the sentence “I’m off to talk to the farrier,” recently.

  13. I ordered two copies — one to keep and one to give away, so that means two dollars for a stove, right?

I wasn’t planning to dress for this event until Sharon said “virtual size six.” So I’m in a virtual size four (ha! Take that!) sheath dress, gun metal gray with a subtle metallic sheen. And a not-so-subtle virtual six-carat diamond solitaire necklace. I’m eating baked brie in puff pastry and lemon curd tarts since my virtual size four body has an insanely high metabolism.

And I’m drinking …. hmmm, can I sneak champagne into this party? I’ll pretend it’s sparkling cider.

Congratulations, Trudy. It’s a fabulous book!

*leans in to give you a hug and air kisses*

Sorry, honey. On a day like this, ya just have to tolerate those touchy-feely types.

  14. Katrina, you look FABULOUS in that size four dress! And you can eat and drink whatever you want at my party. Thanks for the two orders — I also sent one to you to say thanks for promoting it on your blog, so that means you have TWO to give away, and yes, two more dollars towards the refugee stoves. Thanks so much!

“Iโ€™m wearing my virtual pink silk party dress and while nibbling on a piece of virtual chocolate cheesecake!โ€

Actually, I just wanted to congratulate you on your book launch, and tell you that I placed my order with Indigo just a few minutes ago. I want to be in the drawing, because I know I could learn a lot from you.

    Congrats again!

  16. Shawna

    Trudy,

Congratulations again on your book! I finally found a party I don’t have to miss because I live in the Philippines! And I would be nibbling on virtual jackfruit, mangoes, and mangosteen, with coconut-covered dates recently arrived from Qatar where Ron was teaching last. Shucks, if we can have virtually anything we wanted, I doubt I could do better!

To wear, the closet offers teal silk, or black velvet. Virtually, I’d say we downsize the profile… I like coming to parties at nearly midnight and finding I’m early! There are some advantages to living on this side of the ocean…

Congrats again! I knew you were a great writer ever since the Student Movement article about sleeping in the snow fort with all those guys… (or maybe you didn’t write that one?) I’m convinced that in order to write well, one has to live well, and you have had that part figured out for as long as I have known you…

Greetings from The Low Pressure Zone (it’s trying to manufacture a typhoon over here…)!

    Shawna

  17. Jacquie

Congratulations, Trudy! I hope you enjoyed your book launch last evening.

I loved the trailer from a few months ago, so I am excited about reading the book for myself.

I did just order the book and I would like for you to enter my name in the contest…(I’d better get some more writing done)

    All the best.

  18. Hi Trudy! Loved the mini-reading posted above, but wanted more . . . so it’s a good thing I’ve ordered a copy of the book. And my sis had me order one for her as well. We’d both love to be entered in the contest.

Congratulations . . . and wishing you all the best.

I can’t wait to read this book!

  19. Larry S. Bothe

Trudy, I was able to sucessfully order on-line today from Indigo.ca. We’ll see how long it takes to arrive–good for reading in July! FWIW, taking into consideration the CDN-US currency difference and international shipping my order came to about $22. Not bad for a first edition from Trudy! Congrats!!

  20. Congratulations! Looking forward to reading it!

  21. Mrs Tubbs

Congratulations! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve cracked open a bottle of white wine to celebrate / party along with you from across the water.

Book will be ordered after pay day ๐Ÿ™‚ They ship right?!

  22. Congrats. Can’t wait to read the book!

  23. Glendon G.

Trudy, congratulations on your newest release. I trust that the success of this will exceed that of all your previous publications combined. Blessings.

  24. Glendon G.

Hey Trudy, I forget to mention the only disappointment about this virtual party is that the lighting didn’t do justice to your “virtual pink silk.”

  25. Hi, Trudy…
It’s still the day of the launch here in Western Washington, though I’m glad to know you already made the Top 50. Munching on popcorn in my pjs in your honor!

  26. I’ve stumbled upon your web page in google web page information. How did you manage to obtain there?

  27. Wow – great online launch idea!
